Strengthening our community's literacy skills is an integral part of the Imani House mission: to assist residents in becoming "responsible for their lives and surroundings " in an effort to build sustainable communities. Our Adult Education Program provides a supportive environment to help all students reach their educational goals. We want our students to develop strong written and spoken English communication skills, pursue higher education and qualify for better jobs.
Imani House is a council member and affiliate of ProLiteracy, the oldest and largest adult literacy organization in the world. Our Executive Director, Bisi Ideraabdullah is a ProLiteracy Certified Adult Literacy and English as a Second Language Trainer with 33 years of experience in adult education.
Housed in a space donated by The Hanson Place Church, Imani House’s Adult Education Program is vibrant and thriving, drawing more than 120 students per year from more than a dozen countries, including Ghana, Guinea, Morocco, Bangladesh, China, Haiti, Iran, Mexico, Pakistan and Yemen.
Since the free program launched in 1994 it has helped thousands of students realize their potential. The Adult Education Program is supported by a corps of dedicated community volunteer tutors who are trained and certified through Imani House. More than 75 community members volunteered to tutor last fiscal year, logging more than 2,000 instructional hours to help fellow New Yorkers achieve their educational goals.
Thanks to our family of devoted tutors, diligent interns, and contributing friends, our hard-working students are learning to read, improving their English and passing the GED test!
